Newton (Charles Thomas). 'Newton was vice-consul at Mitylene and resided in the Levant from 1852 to 1859. The expeditions to Asia Minor took place over a period from October 1856 to June 1859 and were mostly concerned with the excavations of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe sponsored the first excavation of the Mausoleum, and Newton has dedicated the work to him.' (Blackmer). The Mausoleum, in Bodrum, Turkey was the tomb of Mausoleus, built from 353-350 BC and one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
