Ngbaka People Wood and Wicker Shield
Shield from the Northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, circa late 19th century. From one of the following peoples: Ubangi River area; Manja people [Central Central African Republic (Ouham, Nana-Grébizi, and Kémo Prefectures)], Manja-Ngbaka [Centralwestern Central African Republic (Ombella-M'Poko Prefecture)], Ngbundu people [Northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (Sud-Ubangi Province)], or Lobala people [Northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo (Sud-Ubangi Province)].
Oval wickerwork; carved wooden handle. Four holes in the center where projectiles pierced through. Gripboard decorated with vertical lines like another shield purchased by the American Museum of Natural History in 1906 (acc. no. 90.0/ 344).
