framed: 57.5 x 71 cm.; 22⅝ x 28 in.

Shipping in an estuary: The canvas has not been lined and is providing a stable support to the paint surface. There is mostly fine and settled craquelure across the painted surface. The surface is dirty in areas with a small speck of dirt visible upon closer inspection. The varnish has also yellowed. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a layer of varnish and retouching to some of the craquelure in the sky and small spots elsewhere in the sky. Sections of retouching also along the lower edge of the canvas.
Conwy castle: The canvas has been lined and is providing a stable support to the paint surface. The surface is slightly dirty and there is an area of fine and settled craquelure in the sky, further craquelure to the lower right section. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a layer of varnish, small spots of retouching along the lower edge, concentrated mostly to the lower right corner.

Provenance:
Possibly purchased by Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768-1854).
