Nicolas Party, Swiss b.1980- Blakam's Stone (orange), 2010; acrylic on stone, initialed N.P. in white to underside, overall 18x15x15.5cm Provenance: gifted by the artist to the present owner at New Work, Scotland, Fife, 2010. Note: The present piece is by the Swiss multi-media artist Nicholas Party. Party produces work which, both in its subject matter and medium, calls into question the concept of ‘high art’. This approach is particularly evident in the present piece, through which an orange, an everyday item, is depicted through the somewhat basic medium of stone which the artist has painted. Indeed, this work also brings our attention to the idea of the endurance of art, and the extent to which the act of painting imparts an artificial permanence to objects which are themselves subject to degradation and decay. Party’s choice of medium and the issues with which his art engages are undoubtedly shaped by the fact that he worked as a graffiti artist in the 1990s. Party has carried out commissions for the Dallas Museum of Art and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. His works have been exhibited internationally, including in Glasgow, Beijing, Paris, and Münster.
