Nicolosi 4 part Map of America
Nicolosi, Giovanni Battista (1610-1670). Mexicum in hac forma in lucem edebat...(North America). Engraving with original hand color in outline on four sheets. First edition, first state. Rome, 1660. 17 1/4" x 23" sheet each, approximately; 24" x 29 1/2" framed each.
This map is especially noteworthy for its delineation of the American southwest. It was the first map to incorporate first-hand information. The very rare first issue of this map, with the Rio Grande simply called Rio Escondido and without Lake Ontario named or shaded. Though based on Sanson's 1650 map Amerique Septentrionale, this map has much more eye appeal (Burden 355).
Comparable: Swann, 2011 - $5,520.
