Nicoya Polychrome Tripod Rattle Jar, ex-Museum

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A wonderful pottery rattle jar presenting a spherical body that narrows to an annular rim, all sitting upon 3 nub-like feet. Adorned in hues of black and russet on a cream-colored ground, the body of the vessel is embellished with several horizontal striations and a thick band of abstract design that encircles the rim. Note how each of the feet contain 2 slit-like perforations, which would allow for a petite stone to reverberate a lovely rattling noise from within! Size: 8.5" in diameter x 9.625" H (21.6 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition Report: Repaired from several pieces with restoration. Loss to rim. One leg rattle still functions. Some scratches, nicks, and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining decoration.
