Nirvana Signed New Times Magazine Cover from Opening Night of the In Utero Tour (Arizona, October 18, 1993)
“A diet of spam, link sausage and guacamole juice is my recommendation, Kurdt”—Nirvana’s fully signed New Times cover, obtained on the opening night of the In Utero tour at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, October 18, 1993
Trimmed front cover of New Times Magazine, Arizona edition, from 1993, featuring Nirvana on the cover with the headline “Life After Nevermind,” 9.75 x 8, signed in ballpoint or felt tip by all three members of the band: Kurt Cobain (“A diet of spam, link sausage and guacamole juice is my recommendation, Kurdt”), Dave Grohl (“Amy – Your dad is a-ok. David”), and Krist Novoselic (“Krist”), who writes “Kill me” in a speech bubble next to his likeness. In good to very good condition, with overall wear and dampstaining, including intersecting folds, creasing, and old tape remnants to the corners.
Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from George Brown, the son of the original recipient, who states that his father worked for the Arizona State Fair and Veterans Memorial Coliseum and was assigned as a driver for Nirvana when the band performed there during its In Utero tour in 1993. According to Brown, his sister was present during the visit and, through her father’s connection with the band, had Cobain, Grohl, and Novoselic sign the magazine.
Nirvana kicked off their In Utero tour on October 18, 1993, at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix, marking the beginning of the band’s first large-scale arena tour and their final appearance in the city. Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl were joined by newly added second guitarist Pat Smear, performing on an elaborate stage decorated with flowers, artificial trees, and winged, pregnant figures inspired by the In Utero cover art. The 21-song performance drew from all three of Nirvana’s studio albums, including ‘School,’ ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ ‘All Apologies,’ ‘Blew,’ and the closing ‘Endless, Nameless.’
