[ translate ]

Original Nixon Resigns Richmond Times Dispatch Newspaper - This is a special reissue of the original 15 cent August 9, 1974 issue of the Richmond Times Dispatch, featuring the explosive cover story Nixon Resigns, detailing President Nixon's resignation as a result of the Watergate Scandal. This lot consists of the complete original newspaper. Richard Nixon began his long career of political service after serving as a Commander in the Navy during World War II. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the 12th District of California, from 1947 until 1950, and as a U.S. Senator from California from 1950 until 1953. He ascended to the position of Vice President to President Dwight Eisenhower in 1953, and following an unsuccessful Presidential campaign in 1960, he successfully ran again in 1968, taking office in January 1969. While his Presidency is frequently described by scholars for its unprecedented controversy and resulting scandal leading to his ultimate resignation, Nixon's time in the White House is also marked by several long standing victories, including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as the first manned lunar landings during the Space Race of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
