These gutta-percha jewels were known as mourning jewels, as after the death of her husband, Albert of Saxe-Coburg in 1864, Queen Victoria began to wear austere and limited-value jewels in memory of the deceased. Thus began this fashion that continued until the end of that century.
Gutta percha is a natural resin extracted in the East from a particular tree (Palaquinum) . The value of gutta percha is limited, but it is strongly linked to that historical period. 1864/1910.
