Noe Nesterovich Gedenidze, Russian 1914-2002- Still life for Satsivi, 1976; oil on canvas, inscribed in Cyrillic on the reverse, 78x108cm Provenance: Acquired from the artist’s son by a Private Collection, London in 2002; Sotheby's London, 5 December 2016, lot 56; Private Collection, London Note: This piece is by the Russian artist Noe Nesterovich Gedenidze. Gedenidze studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts, and much later in his career, at the Surikov Moscow State Art Institute. Gedenidze produced work in a range of genres, including landscapes, history paintings, and large-scale murals. Indeed, his most famous works include the ‘Seizure of Kolomna by the Tartars in 1237’, and the ‘Arrival of Ivan the Terrible in Kolomna’, both of which are now in the State Art Museum in Kolomna. The lots in this sale demonstrate the variety of Gedenidze’s talents, and his ability to depict intimate, domestic subject matter, alongside these more imposing historical scenes.
