The objects depicted in the "Vanitas" symbolize the five senses, but also human activities, study, money, pleasures, wealth and power, contrasted with elements that recall time passing too quickly, fragility, destruction and the triumph of death, often depicting a human skull.

The score, the musical instrument and the book symbolize the vanity of knowledge.

The still smoking candle reminds us of "the transience of human life". The burning candle: symbolizes the brevity of human life and worldly pleasures.

Vanitas, which were particularly popular in the 17th century, are rare and highly sought after by collectors. We have a beautiful example here, signed with a caption, that deserves research into the artist.
