North Pole Expedition Participant Medal – Nuclear Icebreaker...

North Pole Expedition Participant Medal – Nuclear Icebreaker Voyage. Large commemorative participant’s medal awarded to a traveller on a voyage to the Geographic North Pole. The reverse depicts a nuclear-powered icebreaker beneath the Aurora Borealis with the inscription “Participant of the Trip to the North Pole”. The anchor-and-atom emblem symbolises the famous nuclear icebreaker fleet used for Arctic exploration and tourism. The obverse features a presentation cartouche left unengraved, intended for a participant’s name. Such medals were issued as souvenirs of one of the world’s most exclusive travel experiences – a voyage through Arctic pack ice to the North Pole aboard a powerful icebreaking vessel. An attractive and unusual piece of polar exploration and maritime memorabilia.
