Northern Italian Renaissance Bronze Table Bell

[ translate ]

Probably Padua, 16th century

The bell of flared form, cast in relief with dense foliate scrolls, grotesque and classical ornament, the stepped and gadrooned crown surmounted by a small standing nude putto holding aloft a vessel in his raised right hand, his left hand resting at his hip; with dark brown patination.

Height 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm).

The elaborately cast ornament and lively figural finial evoke the Paduan Renaissance bronze tradition, associated with workshops active in the late 15th and 16th centuries. Bells with classical or mythological imagery were among the small-scale bronzes produced in northern Italy.

Compare the National Gallery of Art, Washington, Hand Bell with Drunken Silenus, Satyrs, Cavorting Putti, and Musical Instruments, probably Padua, late 15th–early 16th century, accession 1957.14.116.

Oxidation as expected with age.
