Nothing is More Precious than Independence and Freedom. 1975.
In 1966, during the fiercest battles in Vietnam's struggle for independence, Ho Chi Minh rallied citizens to resist U.S. invaders with a speech in which he famously said, "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom." This poster, created to commemorate Vietnam's victory over Saigon, appropriates the text as a celebratory affirmation. The mother here wears the checkered scarf and camouflage pants of the Viet Cong fighters; her children represent hope for a new generation, and the youngest holds a lotus flower—an iconic Vietnamese symbol of purity, beauty, and nobleness.
