"Nouvelle Description de Lamerique ", Picart, Nicolas

[ translate ]

Subject: Western Hemisphere - America
Period: 1667 (circa)
Publication: Tresor des Cartes Geographiques
Color: Black & White
Size: 5.4 x 7.4

This fascinating and uncommon map of the Americas was published in Picart's Tresor des Cartes Geographiques, the last French derivative of Jansson's Atlas Minor. Its most prominent feature is the bulging northwest coast of North America, which is separated from Asia by a narrow Estroit d'Anian. Virgine and Floride are named along the eastern coast of the continent, and a R Grande appears in between Virginia and Nouv. France. The Mississippi is called Achusi, there is no sign of the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence River flows from a small western lake. The mythical Lake Parime is depicted without a name near the equator in South America. A massive continent labeled Terre Australle Incognue runs along the bottom of the map. This is the third state with the distance scale above the title cartouche mostly erased from the plate and Roiaume de Quivira replacing the fictional strait that appeared on earlier states.

References: Burden #342.
Condition: A
A nice impression on a bright sheet with a coat of arms watermark with the initials "CAB" and professional repairs to a minor tear in the border at top right.
