A very early 19th century vintage photograph made during the Novara Expedition of the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Navy 1857-59 showing architecture / house models from Java, Indonesia, late 1850s. The Novara expedition of 1857–1859 was the first large-scale scientific, around-the-world mission of the Austro-Hungarian Imperial navy. Authorized by Archduke Maximilian, the journey lasted 2 years 3 months, from 30 April 1857 until 30 August 1859. The expedition was accomplished by the frigate Novara, under the command of Kommodore Bernhard von Wüllerstorf-Urbair, with 345 officers and crew, plus seven scientists aboard. The locations visited during the expedition included: Gibraltar, Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, St. Paul Island, Ceylon, Madras, Nicobar Islands, Singapore, Batavia, Manila, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Puynipet Island, Stewart Island, Sydney, Auckland, Tahiti, Valparaiso, Gravosa and Triest. The scientific results of the journey were were published in 21 large volumes by the Viennese Academy of Sciences, entitled "Reise der österreichischen Fregatte Novara um die Erde (1861–1876) " which translates to "journey of the Austrian frigate Novara around the earth". (source: Wikipedia) The image offered here was published in the anthropological part of the scientific report of the journey, which was published in 1868. Large vintage albumen print (20. 3 x 17 cm) mounted to original light cardboard. The image is numbered and annotated on the mount. The image does not show a photographer´s credit. Please note that it is not entirely known as yet whether the images published in the scientific report of the Novara expedition were made by photographers that were members of the technical staff of the expedition or bought from local photographers living in the places visited. For further reading: Reisen, so sagt man, ist eine Wissenschaft, published by Simon Weber-Unger, Vienna, 2012. As visible on the scan the mount is wavy and slightly time-stained along the edges. Otherwise the image is in a very nice and clean condition with extraordinary dark tones and only minimal signs of use.
