Nurata Suzani
First half 19th century, 236 x 155 cm, Central Asia, South West Uzbekistan
A gorgeous Nurata suzani embroidered in subtle colours. The ogival central medallion with a cruciform, floral interior design placed at the centre of the field bears a striking resemblance to the medallions of Persian workshop carpets. Small flowering trees and shrubs are arranged around it, and two bowls holding flowering vases have been added at the sides. As in most suzanis from Nurata, a very large tree in abundant flower is aligned diagonally in each corner of the field. – Slight signs of age and wear, good overall condition. The reverse is backed with the original, plain white cotton fabric.
