Nyonya Ware Lamp with Phoenix Design Late Qing

A Chinese made Nyonya/ Peranakan ware vase that was made into a lamp in the 1920’s. The color is a vibrant turquoise and rose.

The heavy porcelain vase was cut down at the neck and drilled to make a lamp in the early twentieth century. The vase is decorated with a design of a phoenix perched on a Lake Tai stone with a second phoenix looking on. They are surrounded by magnolia and peony blossoms. There is a cloud pattern covering the vase. These designs are were painted using bright turquoise, rose, yellow and iron red over glaze enamels. The painting is extensive and intricate but with a freedom.

The vase feels so very soft with a nice feeling of thickness. It has oxidized well. The metal mounts are a bronze or brass that has darkened with time. There is a greenish patina that has come with age. There is a newer electric cord that was added. The light works. The base is covered in old green felt.

MEASUREMENTS

16 ½” (42.0 cm) tall x 5 1/2” (14 cm) diameter. Weighs 3 lb 9.2 oz (1620 g)

CONDITION

There are no chips, cracks, or breaks to the lamp vase. It was drilled and the neck was cut down to mount it as a lamp. There are light wear scratches on the surface, but the enamels are still bright and fresh looking with no flaking losses. The metal mounts are intact with no dents or breaks. They have a greenish patina from age and use.

A fun colorful lamp with a feeling of age and artistry. The vase makes a great lamp.
