LOT 117

O. NEAL | Sir Walter Compton (1749-1773) and his hounds

[ translate ]

O. NEAL
active in 1770
Sir Walter Compton (1749-1773) and his hounds

oil on canvas, unlined
192.5 by 147cm.; 75¾by 57 7/8in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured and dulled. A fairly distinctive network of craquelure has developed throughout the surface of the painting, though it is less apparent through the form of the stretcher behind the canvas, which is clearly visible from the front around all four edges and diagonals in each corner, and in a horizontal band through the centre of the canvas. There are three small areas of slight lifting paint: in the upper right corner, in the background to the right of the huntsman’s head, and at the top of the horse’s raised leg. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old, milky varnish making it difficult to discern historic restoration. In overall good condition.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."
