[OCCUPATIONAL] Impressive Whole-Plate Tintype of an Active Rural Sawmill Operation
Whole-plate tintype on lacquered iron sheet, uncased. Verso bears period white grease pencil inventory or stock numbers "8357 / K". Ca. 1870s - 1880s. Measures approx. 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.
An expansive outdoor occupational tableau documenting an active Gilded Age lumber mill operation nestled against a dense timberline. The foreground is strewn with bark, offcuts, and raw slabs, where a crew of over a dozen millworkers and lumbermen in broad-brimmed hats, suspenders, and work aprons pose across the mill yard. Multiple heavy draft-horse teams and loaded four-wheeled timber wagons line the exterior platform, including a team directly hauling a massive load of rough-sawn dimensional boards alongside an immense pile of raw scrap siding outside the open-sided mill barn. Large-format tintypes capturing industrial outdoor labor scenes of this scale and clarity are uncommon.

Good to very good condition. The plate exhibits strong tones and sharp focal definition. The metal plate shows clipped corners for period display framing, light perimeter edge flaking, and a few minor, stable surface bends typical of whole-plate ferrotypes.
