The Library of David Lloyd, Part IORIGINAL GOUACHE BY ZELDA FITZGERALD.
FITZGERALD, ZELDA. 1900-1948. Save me the Waltz. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. 8vo. Publisher's turquoise cloth lettered in blue, original dust jacket, minor wear to edges of dust jacket.WITH: original hand painted flower scene on the front panel of a card, 155 x 116 mm, pencil and gouache on paper, signed "Z.S.F." lower left.FIRST EDITION OF ZELDA'S ONLY PUBLISHED NOVEL, WITH AN ORIGINAL SIGNED GOUACHE CARD LAID-IN. Although panned at the time of publication, and bearing distinct similarities to the other Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night published the same year, the novel, alongside Zelda's artwork, has undergone a reassessment beginning with Mancy Mitford's 1970 biography Zelda. Michiko Kakutani wrote in 1991, "Zelda Fitzgerald succeeded, in this novel, in conveying her own heroic desperation to succeed at something of her own, and she also managed to distinguish herself as a writer with, as Edmund Wilson once said of her husband, a 'gift for turning language into something iridescent and surprising.'" The original qouache painting laid in appears to be part of a series of cards, likely accomplished in the early 1940s.
