ORNATE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN

[ translate ]

ORNATE DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN
Smoothbore double barrel shotgun, 46.5 in. long. This 16-gauge gun bears a percussion cap, an updated sling attachment, and a trigger for each barrel. Notable recess in the stock where the original sling attachment was mounted. A highly ornate shotgun featuring silver plates with beautiful engravings of filigree designs and detailed depictions of a rabbit and a fox. The full-length ribbed section that separates the two barrels bears the mark ‘Sauer Dresden' for JP Sauer & Sohn of Germany the oldest firearms manufacturer still active in Germany, though for this example they are believed to be the retailer not the manufacturer. No other markings are present. We cannot trace the origins of this gun to royalty or any other notable, but the expert craftsmanship indicates this was meant for a special recipient. Per our consignor this was brought back by a World War II veteran of Bastogne and the Bulge, who would later become a major general. A small chip visible on the butt and some trivial scratches on the stock, else very good.
