The piece is designed in the Jacobean Revival style, featuring barley twist (solomonic) railings supported by turned, block-form corner and end posts. The fender is composed of three sections, utilizing a telescoping mechanism that allows the width to be adjusted to accommodate various hearth sizes. The central front rail consists of a hollowed-out box section that slides over the two side rail components. The reverse side, intended to face the hearth, is reinforced with a rusted iron or steel plate featuring two horizontal sliding bolt tracks and screw fasteners to lock the width in place.
