Obruk Long Rug
First half 19th century, 288 x 102 cm, Central Anatolia, Konya region
The blazing red field of this Obruk long rug contains large elongated diamonds decorated with massive, blue hooked outlines. Three diamonds are represented as whole forms. The infinite nature of the repeat is emphasised by the halved fourth diamond seen at the upper end of the field. Truncated by the border, hooked diamonds with light green hooked outlines protrude into the intervening spaces from the sides. Stepped polygons alternate with pairs of blossoms in the wide apricot border. A further long rug of this rare type has been published in a catalogue on the Gülgönen Collection. – Signs of age and wear, a number of large repiled sections. The original selvedges and remains of the kilim finishes survive.
