Octavio Medellín (American, 1907-1999) Rare Seven-Piece Drink Set, circa 1960 Glazed ceramic 17 x 7-3x4 x 3-3x4 inches (43.2 x 19.7 x 9.5 cm) (pitcher) 8-1x8 x 2-7x8 inches (20.6 x 7.3 cm) (cup, each) Signed to underside of each cup PROVENANCE: Dallas Collection, gift of the artist; Thence by descent. This beautiful and rare drink set was gifted by Octavio Medellín to friends who worked alongside him at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (now the Dallas Museum of Art) in the 1950s and 60s. The artist was a prominent fixture in Dallas for several decades as a teacher and founder of the Creative Arts Center. Over the course of his career, his work became increasingly abstract as he experimented in various mediums, including ceramics. Medellín will be the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art beginning in February, 2022.
