The first edition seems to have appeared in 1724, in 4 volumes. 6 frontispieces (2 in fact, each repeated three times) : a portrait of the Duke of Noailles and Jesus Christ in volume I, a figure for Cesarion in volume II, 3 figures in volume III, a figure in volume VI. A historian originally from Savoy and who was its historiographer in the 17th century, the Abbot of Saint Réal advocated in history a study of men and characters rather than just facts, in accordance with the ancients. He was interested in all forms of historical writing and worked in each of them. His main works, collected here, are the historical short story Dom Carlos, History of the conspiracy of the Spanish against Venice in 1618, Caesarion, On the navigation of the Romans. The works also contain various treatises on history and philosophy, annotated translations and The Memoirs of the Duchess of Mazarin, of which he was the reader and friend, some say lover.
