Of Irish interest. A George IV silver mathematics prize medal.
c.1823.
Of oval form, the medal inscribed 'Ricardo Guallero Synnot Egregie mereritti in Mathematics December 1823', the reverse inscribed 'Doctarum Hederae Praemia Frontium' framing a central wreath of ivy branches, unmarked, 6cm high, approx. weight 0.5ozt
Footnote:
The Latin inscription on this medal translates as 'To Richard Guallero Synnot, for outstanding merit in Mathematics, December 1823' and 'Ivy wreaths: a reward for learned brows'. The ivy wreath is an ancient symbol of learning and was used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans to reward poets, writers, and learned individuals, much like the laurel or bay leaf. It is likely that this medal was awarded to Richard Walter Synnot (b. 1812., d.1841) when he was a schoolboy (aged c.11). Records indicate that a Richard Walter Synnot was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1812. His father was Sir Walter Synnot (1742-1821) of Ballymoyer House, Armagh, who served as High Sheriff of Armagh. Sir Walter married Ann Martin in 1804 and the couple had a daughter (Elizabeth) and a son (Richard Walter).
In 1836, Richard Walter Synnot married Henriette Thornton, an English human rights activist who campaigned for the abolition of slavery. Her father, William Thornton, was an English economist, banker and philanthropist who was one of the founders of the Clapham Sect of social reformers. Richard died in 1841, but the couple had two children (Robert Harry Inglis Synnot (b.1837) and Henriette Louisa (b.1840)).
