The bell inscribed 'The Officers The Pompadours from G. A. Alexander Late Major "The Buffs" The Nile 3 May 1885', the handle modelled as a castle with five turrets, 9cm dia., 13cm high, approx. weight 10.8ozt
Footnote: 'The Buffs' (The Royal East Kent Regiment) and The Pompadours (the 56th West Essex Regiment of Foot) were involved in the Gordon Relief Expedition (1884-1885) up the Nile to relieve Major-General Charles George Gordon at Khartoum, Sudan. Gordon and his forces had been under siege since March 1884, and by the autumn of that year their situation was becoming increasingly desperate. However, the rescue mission did not arrive in time. On 26 January 1885, Khartoum fell to the Mahdist army and the entire garrison was slaughtered, including General Gordon. His head was cut off and delivered to Muhammad Ahmad.
