The Drinking Place

A fine Newlyn School oil on canvas, attributed to the famous Charles Walter Simpson.
Charles Walter Simpson (1885-1971) was an English painter born in Camberley, Surrey. Simpson moved to Cornwall in the early 1900's to join the already thriving colony of painters. Whilst there he met and married Ruth Alison, herself a portrait painter and fellow-student under Alexander Stanhope Forbes. Residing in the Lamorna Valley, Simpson developed a reputation as a painter of wildlife, with a specific passion for horses. He exhibited at the Royal Academy once in 1948.
His acquaintance with Stanhope Forbes would explain why the painting depicts Forbes’ horses and grounds man. Indeed the subject is almost identical to ‘The Drinking Place’ painted by Alexander Stanhope Forbes in 1900. The same horses, one brown and the other white, stand near a small area of water. The rider is also the same and wears the same attire of blue overcoat and light coloured cap.
Though unsigned, the style of the painting is typical of Simpson’s work; comprising thick layering of paint and deliberate brush strokes.
The painting comes with a signed, 1948 dated copy of ‘The Fields of Home, Charles Simpson, R.I.
The painting was purchased by Les Trahair of Newlyn, friend of both Stanhope Forbes and Charles Simpson. After passing down through the family, the painting passed into the hands of the niece
