Oil painting on canvas. Alessandro Magnasco, known as Lissandrino (Genoa, 1667-1749). Inside of convent with nuns at work. 93x132.

"Piece not very well known, this of the Magnasco. In a period in which was held a heated debate on corruption of the monastic orders. The painter through his works, called brotherhoods, expresses his thoughts, veiled by a subtle irony. In later years, seems to want to show the various aspects, the various ways in which it was lived the religious reality in convents and monastic orders. Many works, showing his figures, constructed with fast and thick brushstrokes, such as specks, which read, but reflecting the situation conventivale era. The corpus of his paintings is like a unique work descriptive, illustrating the chronicle weather conditions, many unknown. Not anticlericalistico, but a warning to pander more appropriate religious behavior to moral ethics, where prayer and recollection to be protagonists. The monasteries can not be residences where he leads a comfortable life, made of futility and pleasantries. The painting depicts almost a status of what it was a way of life and noble aristocrat who did not and should have no place in a religious place. The sisters of the aristocratic ladies seem intent on thread and embroidery work, the floral decorations and chocolate tastings, surrounded by dogs and cats, assisted by young boarders, dressed elegantly in pink. An atmosphere that is frivolous comparison in another work "Chocolate" much more significant and meaningful read up in this aspect of the modus vivendi monostico. In this quiet portrayal he moves his figures combined with a perfectly directed to the scenery, as usual, has the participation of another hand." STUDIO ASOR
