Oil painting on canvas, Giovanni Battista Carlone (Genoa 1603-1684). St. Mark. 95x70, 115x90 frame.

"This painting representation of St. Mark, is without a doubt a work reminiscent of Tuscany, as a result of his stay in Florence and the contact had with Domenico Cresti, known as the Passignano. Manifesting , too, the character of Caravaggio's influence, which was able to absorb with its educational trips made in Rome. A painting, certainly of great relevance, making it free from the Baroque mannerism of which Carlone was the protagonist for the most part of the seventeenth century. The strength of the pictorial palette given by scarlet-colored coat and ocher-colored dress, and the exuberant albeit with the use of few colors and highlights with long, thick brush strokes. All this and is the clear Florentine legacy that goes well with a chiaroscuro of the scenic style of the Roman heritage in clear reference to of Caravaggio's luminism. The San Marco, located among the misty clouds, has a technically almost affrescale position, seen in perspective from the bottom up. In fact, the Carlone, had many customer in Genoese churches and was prolific producer of frescoes, decorator Mannerist Baroque. "
