Okimono - Elephant ivory - A sleuth of bears preying on seals - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912) Rare okimono depicting a group of polar bears attacking seals. The eyes are in mother-of-pearl and ivory, particularly the bears' eyes in mother-of-pearl express the ferocity of the animal in the act of hunting. The sculptor was able to capture the terror in the expression of the seals chased by the bears as they tried to escape among the waves of the sea. This particular type of subject was usually produced in the prestigious schools of Tokyo. Excellent condition considering its age.
