Okimono - Elephant ivory, Mother of pearl - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Rare okimono depicting legendary Guan-yu warrior from ancient China. Legend has it that he himself forged his crescent-shaped halberd. Sculpted with great skill with the clothes richly inlaid in the motif of clouds and the powerful and stern expression caught as he smooths his long beard. The blade and the tip of the halberd are in mother of pearl, a detail which makes them particularly similar to the steel with which the weapons were normally forged. In very good overall condition, with signs of wear consistent with its age. Signed 'Imin' on the robe. Japanese item from the Meiji period.
