Monobloc ivory sphere sculpted in bas-relief with seven Rakan, with Buddhist and Shinto ritual scenes, each holding a symbol in hand, indicating spiritual fusion and cooperation between the two most important religions of Japan The more ancient native Japanese religion involved the adoration of the 'kami', or divinities, natural spirits or simply spiritual presences. Buddism, on the other hand, consists in large part of the continuation or evolution of the old schools of Chinese Buddhism, some which are now extinct in their country of origin, introduced to the Japanese archipelago over various periods.
