Olive Black Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting

Olive P. Black (American, 1868-1948) oil on canvas landscape painting depicting a stream meandering through a line of trees, with gently rising hills beyond. The late autumn gold and bronze foliage of the trees is reflected in the water below. Signed "Olive P. Black" lower left. Newer Newcomb Macklin-style giltwood frame with incised stylized foliate decoration to corners. Placcard with artist name and life dates affixed lower center of frame. Sight: 23" H x 29" W. Frame: 34" H x 40" W. Biography: Olive Black was born in Massachusetts but later studied art in New York, at both the Art Students League and the New York National Academy of Design. Her teachers included Hugh Bolton Jones and William Merritt Chase, and her style is said to incorporate aspects of the Barbizon School and Impressionist styles she learned from each, respectively. Black exhibited at many prominent institutions, including the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Club of Philadelphia.

Condition Report: Painting has been lined. 1/8" flake at left center edge, a few tiny scattered flakes lower left corner, near signature. Edges of canvas are taped en verso, and a protective backing board has been applied. Frame is later and has a few tiny scattered chips.
