LOT 0006

Olmec Ceramic Beaker of Howling Coyote w/ Black Glaze

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Las Bocas, Olmec, ca. 800 BCE to 300 BCE. One of my favorites! A delightful ceramic vessel in the form of a howling coyote, featuring a huge head relative to its round body. The head is thrown back, the ears perked up, the eyes incised. A short snout projects from the uppermost point of the mouth, which is wide and slightly everted. Las Bocas-style Olmec figures are named after an archaeological site in the modern Mexican state of Puebla, although most of the figures are from the surrounding area and not from the site itself. The style has come to be associated with the classic Olmec "baby face" figures. This one is delightful - you can almost hear the animal issuing its distinctive howl! Size: 3" W x 3.95" H (7.6 cm x 10 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Taos, New Mexico, USA collection, from inheritance, collected in the 1950s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
