Olmec Pottery Seated Anthropomorphic Figure

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 900 to 600 BCE. A fantastic seated anthropomorphic figure, hand-built from pale orange terracotta, with a pair of sinuous legs crossed in front. One arm rests atop a bent knee while the other is held just beneath the drooping chest. The stylized countenance is comprised of slit-form eyes, a triangular nose, an open mouth, flared ears, and a wide brow, all beneath a vertically striated coiffure. Size: 3" W x 4.375" H (7.6 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private St. Petersburg, Florida, USA collection, acquired in 2019; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s; ex-Knoedler Gallery, New York, New York, USA

Abrasions to limbs, body, and head, with light fire-clouding on base and back, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
