Information obtained from the vintage section of the Omega website. The Seamaster collection dates from the 1950s, when Venice gave the inspiration for one of the most famous Omega symbols. During a visit to the city, a member of the Omega design team, was struck by the beautiful, decorative sculptures of the hippocampus of Neptune that adorned the sides of the gondolas. This is how Omega came upon the Seamaster symbol and, from 1957, the watches from this collection began to bear the emblem. From this moment, Omega has paid homage to the city of Venice. The convex dial recalls the vaulted ceilings of Venetian architecture. The spherical crown is also inspired by the city, echoing the shape of Saint Mark's dome. Consequently the famous medallion of the hippocampus was engraved on the case back, along with 'Seamaster', this distinguishing motif was applied with the specific purpose of honouring the city of Venice.
