On 20 July 1969, mankind took its first steps on the Moon, forever linking the Omega Speedmaster to one of the greatest achievements in human history. To commemorate the Apollo 11 mission, Omega created its first numbered edition Speedmaster in 18k yellow gold, produced in just 1,014 examples. On 25 November 1969, a selection of these watches was presented to NASA astronauts during a special appreciation dinner in Houston. With its champagne dial, contrasting burgundy tachymeter bezel and yellow gold case, this commemorative edition offered an entirely new interpretation of the legendary Moonwatch.
The present example, individually numbered 859, belongs to the series made available to the public. Its warm champagne dial, applied gold indexes and distinctive burgundy bezel create a striking contrast, while the familiar 42 mm case retains the unmistakable silhouette of the Speedmaster Professional. The watch retains its commemorative case back engraved with “The First Watch Worn on the Moon”, surrounded by the inscription “Omega Speedmaster Apollo XI 1969”.
More than a commemorative watch, the Apollo XI Speedmaster represents a tangible connection to a defining moment in the history of space exploration.
