Onorio Marinari, Study of a Youth's Head, probably Saint John
Onorio Marinari
1627 Florence - 1715 Florence
Study of a Youth's Head, probably Saint John
Oil on canvas. 46 x 34 cm. Certificate
Sandro Bellesi, Florenz. Provenance
Privatbesitz Italien.
The canvas is intriguing due to the contrast of finished and unfinished areas and is probably to be understood as a study from a model, which the artist later transformed into a Saint John by adding a halo and staff.
Professor Bellesi attributes the work to the oeuvre of Onorio Marinary, and dates it to the last decades of the 17th century, basing his opinion on comparison with other works such as the Apollo in the Houkul collection in Houston, and the Ganymede in a private collection (S. Benassai: Onorio Marinari, Florence 2011, pp. 154-157), where the artist uses the same model.
