After placer gold was discovered in the Ophir gulch, Blackfoot City was first settled in 1865 as a gold mining camp. It was located on Ophir Creek in what is now Powell County. During its heyday it boasted a lively business district. The name was changed to Ophir in 1896. There is little left of the community now.
