Orazio Grevenbroeck - View of a Southern Harbour Southern Landscape with River and Bridge in Stormy Weather

[ translate ]

Orazio Grevenbroeck

View of a Southern Harbour

Southern Landscape with River and Bridge in Stormy Weather

Oil on copper. each 17.4 x 34 cm.

The two small coppers relate to the typlcal production of Orazio, who often used copper panels of similar measurements. Not unusually for the painter, he merges two different genres in the pair: a fancy harbour view and a capriccio landscape. Indeed, the pare can be closely compared with a Landscape with a Fortess amd a River Lansdcape with a farmhouse (oil on copper, 17.5 x 34 cm, Druout, 2.12.2011, no. 29, see: F. Dassie: I Grevenbroeck, Verona 2019, p. 116).
The river landscape is executed with with a highly detailed rendering, and much attention to the atmospheric effects, whereas the port representation links to Lorrain´s models and is carachterised by an enameled and vivid palette, also typical for Orazio´s oeuvre.
We are greteful to Dr Dassie for confirming the attribution and for his kind assistance in the cataloguing.

Certificate

Laruens J. Bol, 24 March 1980.

Provenance
