Oreodont Fossil Skull Merycoidodon sp. Late Oligocene Brule Formation White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA This ominous Oreodont skull may look rather sinister, but these mammals were herbivores rather than carnivores. This massive skull is fairly complete, aside from some of the back of the head "missing" and part of the lower jaw. The teeth are generally in fine condition, although the canines are reconstructed. The key bonus feature of this skull, measuring nearly 10 inches (25 cm) from back to front, are two clear predatory bite marks on the top of the head, likely left there by a prehistoric "pig-like" animal known as Archaeotherium. Of the Merycoidodon variety, this is a quite large and equally visually striking, fully inflated specimen featuring wonderful dimensionality, as well as fine preservation of the bony material. Measurements: 9.84 x 6.69 x 5.91 inches (25.00 x 17.00 x 15.00 cm) HID09710052018 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
