Oreodont Fossil Skull in Matrix Merycoidodon sp. Late Oligocene Brule Formation White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA This disjointed scene is quite amazing, consisting of a large Merycoidodon skull in matrix along with a few pieces of post-cranial material as well as a nearly complete lower jaw section. Of particular note are two pronounced predatory bite marks on the top of the piece, likely made by an Archaeotherium, which was an ancient "pig-like" mammal, making the prehistoric diorama all the more intriguing and appealing. The bone has nice coloration relative to other more bleached-out specimens, and an abundance of the teeth are in excellent condition. In terms of other Oreodont fossils, this is definitely one outstanding collection piece. There is just much to like about this dynamic assemblage from the Oligocene of the famous White River Badlands in South Dakota. The fossil group was expertly prepared for a dramatic and visual display.
