[ translate ]

Original French intaglio etching by Coppier, Andre-Charles ( 1868-1948 ). After the original 1487 diptych painting attributed to Hans Memling, this image was the right side of the Early Netherlandish devotional diptych depicting the donor of the artwork, Maarten van Nieuwenhove (11 November 1463 - 16 August 1500 ) a wealthy gentleman from a noble family of Bruges with connections at the court of Burgundy. In the 1490s, Van Nieuwenhove was successively a city councilor, the captain of the civic guard, & in 1498 mayor of Bruges. The left side of the original artwork depicted Memlings "Virgin & Child". Hans Memling ( also spelled Memlinc; c. 1430 – 11 August 1494) was a German painter who moved to Flanders & worked in the tradition of Early Netherlandish painting. He was born in the Middle Rhine region, & probably spent his childhood in Mainz. He had moved to the Netherlands by 1465 and spent time in the Brussels workshop of Rogier van der Weyden. He was subsequently made a citizen of Bruges, where he became one of the leading artists in which he painted religious works that often incorporated portraits of his wealthy patrons. Memling's patrons included wealthy burghers ( bankers, merchants, & politicians), clergymen, & aristocrats. Â
