More information on Hereke carpets
The coastal city of Hereke lies close to Istabul on the north edge of the bay of Izmit. Since 1843 Hereke has been a unique weaving centre, when the Ottoman Emperor Sultan Abdulmecid established the Hereke imperial factory. Originally, Hereke caroets were made exclusively for the aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire and offered as a gift for visiting heads of state and royal palaces. In 1890 for the first time, the carpets were made available to the public. Today, Hereke carpets are sought-after collector's pieces. Hereke carpets represent the pinnacle of Turkish weaving tradition and this is where the best of all Turkish hand-knotted carpets are made. The carpets are double-knotted with the Turkish knot (symmetrical knot) and either woven exclusively with a silk chain and a silk pile or with wool and cotton. In Hereke carpets, only the best raw fabrics are used and the silk used comes from the city of Bursa. Hereke carpet designs are inspired by both traditional Turkish and curvilinear Persian carpet motifs and typically include detailed depictions of flowers, birds, mihrabs (prayer niches) and the tree of life. The colour palette is wide and harmonious, and the colours used in the carpets are ivory tones, dark blue, red, yellow and green. Still to this day, Hereke manufacturers some of the best silk carpets in the world.
