Born Fuyuki Kageyama in 1908 to a Japanese tea merchant and his wife who were traveling in Ohio, his mother died after giving birth and the father, about to return to Japan, consented to the offer of Columbus lawyer and state legislator John Barnes to adopt the infant. Raised as an "American boy", after attending a local art school, Barnes became a cartoonist for Columbus newspapers and a commercial artist for a popular newspaper for elementary school children. Whether or not he encountered problems during World War II because of his ethnicity is unknown, but in 1937 he was briefly arrested as a suspected "Japanese spy"while on holiday taking tourist snapshots which happened to have an Army Arsenal in the background.
