Date indication: pre-earthquake, before 1923. Seal: Kakei (= Takahashi Shōtei) . Catalogue number Shotei. com: M-144. Provenance; from the collection of a Swedish naval officer and Asian art collector who was sent to Japan in 1923. Condition: the crepe print is in very good condition. With a fine halo around the moon. Supporting paper has some very small folds at the edges. The lot will be packaged with care and shipped insured with a Track & Trace code. Shotei was among the first designers to be recruited into Watanabe's stable of artists. Many Watanabe prints were designed for export. By 1923, Shōtei had produced nearly 500 designs for Watanabe, when Tokyo was hit by the Great Kanto earthquake. The fires ignited by the earthquake raged for three days and Watanabe's print shop and all the woodblocks created by Shōtei and the other early shin hanga artists were destroyed. After the disaster, Shōtei produced 250 more prints for Watanabe, some of which were reproductions of the older images lost in the fires. Shōtei used a variety of names, such as Hiroaki, Rakutei, and Kakei.
