Original woodblock print by Asano Takeji (1900–1998) - Rain in Kiyomizu Temple - 1951 (first edition)

. This is a first edition print, please view the date at the bottom of the left margin. This date was cut away by the publisher after the first edition.

. Born in Kyoto, Takeji Asano worked in both shin-hanga as well as sosaka-hanga Japanese woodblock print traditions. He studied Western and Japanese painting, and became interested in woodblock printing after taking a course by Hiratsuka Un'ichi, one of the founders of sosaku-hanga (also called the creative print movement) . In 1929, he was one of the founders of the Kyoto Creative Print Society. After WWII he made woodblock print designs of famous places in and around Kyoto. Aside from his designs for publishers Uchida en Unsodo, he published his own work as well.

. Commentary: fantastic bokashi shading in the evening sky. Detailed 'carving' and sharp print. Beautiful colours. A very beautiful first edition Asano print
