This painting appears to have been professionally cleaned. Upon further inspection once lifting the cardboard backing, the canvas appears to have been waxed on the reverse, though it is difficult to know if this is the original canvas or the back of a supporting canvas without being able to further remove the composition from the frame and examine more closely along the edge of the stretcher to see if there is a trimmed canvas laid to a larger canvas through a wax-relining process. When the face is viewed under ultra violet light, there is a grey-beige pigment used throughout the entire composition that consistently fluoresces. Areas of some inpainting are visible near the doorway in the lower left side, and within some of the roofline. Overall, this is unusual to discover on a composition of this age.
